Nota - News of the area

The Beginning…

In April 1970, Hawks Nest-Tea Gardens Progress Association realised the need for an informative newsletter of events including activities in the area. Each issue comprised four foolscap pages and about 50 copies were run off a very old manual Roneo machine. Mr Peter Richards became Honorary Editor until July 1971 followed by Mrs Shirley Barron for the next 12 years. Shirley stated “I had not typed for 30 years and was never very fond of it, but I bought a typewriter and practised and canvassed for copy and advertisements”.

Shirley was aided by Susan Sharpe who helped with stencils, calendar of events and tide charts. May Gam, Progress members and many other residents helped with manual Roneo, sorting, stapling and delivery. Papers were delivered door to door by the milkman on his round to customers. Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest Post Offices held Nota and weekenders provided stamped envelopes to have it posted.

The decision was made at the end of 1972 to produce a printed paper in 1973 by The Cape Hawke Advocate.

Nota newspapers from April 1970 to 1996 have been entrusted to Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Family Research Group Inc., by the Progress Association. Our group have had Nota copied to 8 reels of microfilm through the NSW State Library.

TROVE - is an Australian online library database hosted by the National Library of Australia as an indispensable resource for historical research worldwide.

OUR PROJECT is to have microfilms digitised to Trove through the National Library of Australia by their TROVE section.

The estimated cost of this project is close to twenty thousand dollars ($20,000) and can be completed in stages. We recently received a grant from Royal Australian Historical Society which was funded by NSW Government-Create NSW program. TGHNRFG Inc. is seeking help to raise funds to cover the first 4 reels.

Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Family Research Group would be most grateful for any contribution to help with the costs towards this very worthwhile project.
